Interpersonal touch – from a caress to a beating – is one of the most intimate ways of communication. Within the shortest possible moment of haptic perception one exchanges a host of conscious and subliminal information as well as emotion. Movements become “ingrained into the bones”, events are traced within memory, mind and body construct an image of belonging or alienation. The absence of another person’s touch can be dearly missed or come as a relief. Any interaction of ones fingers – ones skin – with the surrounding world enables an understanding that cannot be replaced with any other sense.

Based on the principle of old-time learning gloves for sign languages these gloves catalogue body memories of interactions that have “written” themselves into the skin – to be put on again like one would take out an old photograph.
